Subic Bay Memories and History
This topic is for all the former service members who served at or travalled to the US Naval Base at Subic Bay, Philippines. This amazing base had a history all the way back to 1885 when Spain first built it. The US first held the base in 1899 to 1942 when the Japanese took the Philippines from General Macarthur in 1942 through 1945.
Macarthur took it back in 1945 and it was a pivotal US naval asset until its decommissioning in 1992.
Please use this topic to list your experiences there, especially your interactions with the locals. Great stories make for great readings.

Filipinas from Luzon
My brother was a war correspondant during the Vietnam war and spent a lot of time on Luzon Island. He has an immense journal of photographs from there, including those of his wife whom he met in '72.
I have never actually visited the island, but I feel as if I know the place from all those old photos and stories he told. Wild times; I am both envious of his life then and more than a little glad it wasn't me.
He married an 18 year old Filipina girl named Bonie and has a gaggle of grandchildren now. Happy family. He retired in 2011. You would recognize him if you saw him, but only wants the quiet family life now.
Great guy, great family, great career.
Love ya, Bro.
